EUROPD – 12th European Peritoneal Dialysis Meeting

From the 2nd till the 5th of October 2015, Krakow will host an international scientific conference devoted to peritoneal dialysis. As in the case of hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis replaces the function of kidneys in patients in whom they are irreversibly damaged. Although peritoneal dialysis is not as popular as hemodialysis, it is equally effective. Moreover, in contradiction to hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis does not require the use of expensive equipment and gives much freedom and independence to patients in their everyday life.

The conference is organised by EuroPD – a leading European scientific association and public benefit organisation. The aim of EuroPD is to improve and promote peritoneal dialysis through stimulation of research and education in this field. The first scientific conference of EuroPD in 1993 attracted 300 participants. This year's conference, which is already the 12th meeting held under the auspices of EuroPD, will gather almost 1,500 specialists from around the world. The leading topic of the meeting will be “Knowledge as the basis of success in peritoneal dialysis.” The participants will discuss how progress in basic and applied research can help adjust this method of treatment to the wishes and requirements of patients and daily practice in home conditions.

The conference in Krakow will be held in the recently opened ICE Krakow Congress Centre, which provides excellent conditions for plenary debates, as well as workshops and discussions in small groups. The choice of Krakow as the site of this year’s EuroPD resulted not only from the city’s beauty and excellent conference infrastructure, but also from the need to recognise the work of Polish scientists and doctors, who contribute significantly to the development of peritoneal dialysis therapy.
