Grają 50 YEARS OF PLAYING FOR US! THE GREAT JUBILEE OF SKALDOWIEnas od 50-ciu lat! Wielki Jubileusz zespołu SKALDOWIE.
The Skaldowie band was formed in Krakow in 1965. The founder is composer, pianist and vocalist, Andrzej Zieliński, at the time a student of the Academy of Music in Krakow, who formed the band together with his brother Jacek – a violinist and singer, also a student of the Academy of Music. Over 50 years, Skaldowie have given countless concerts all over the world and recorded over 500 songs. On the 17th of November, they will celebrate their golden jubilee in the city they come from. The concert will be held in the state-of-the-art Auditorium Hall of the ICE Kraków Congress Centre.
Skaldowie made their debut in October 1965 at the 2nd Krakow Song Market (II Krakowska Giełda Piosenki) contest, where they won first prize for their song “Moja czarownica”, with music by Andrzej Zieliński and lyrics by Wiesław Dymny. At the same time, they began their collaboration with poet Leszek Aleksander Moczulski, who became the literary manager of the group. Skaldowie repeated their success in the following two editions of the competition. In late 1967, the line-up of the band was finalised: Andrzej Zieliński (organ, piano, keyboard, vocals), Jacek Zieliński (violin, trumpet, keyboard, vocals), Konrad Ratyński (bass guitar, vocals), Jerzy Tarsiński (electric guitar), Jan Budziaszek (percussion). After adding Grzegorz Górkiewicz on keyboards in 1987, the band functions with the same line-up to this day.
The group’s music is difficult to definitely categorize, because it not only contains various musical genres (pop, rock, jazz, progressive rock), but it is enriched (mainly by Andrzej Zieliński) with elements and motifs from Polish highland and classical music. All of this means that the music of Skaldowie has a specific, unique and original character, which makes it still sound fresh despite the passage of time. The most outstanding artists have written songs for the band: Leszek A. Moczulski, Wojciech Młynarski, Agnieszka Osiecka, Andrzej Kuryło, Andrzej Jastrzębiec-Kozłowski, Ewa Lipska, Leszek Falecki and Tadeusz Śliwiak.
In 50 years, Skaldowie have played countless concerts all over the world, appearing in such places as Carnegie Hall in New York, they have recorded approx. 500 songs (several dozen of which have become big hits) and released over a dozen albums – the most important of which are: “Skaldowie” (1967); “Cała jesteś w skowronkach” [“You’re Covered in Skylarks”] (1969); “Od wschodu do zachodu słońca” [“From Sunrise to Sunset”](1970); “Krywań, Krywań” [“Kriváň, Kriváň”] (1972); “Stworzenia świata część druga” [“The Creation of the World, Part 2”] (1976), as well as “Harmonia świata” [“Harmony of the World”] (2006) and “Oddychać i kochać” [“Breathe and Love”] (2010).
Additionally, the band has appeared in the films: Mocne uderzenie (Big Beat), Cierpkie głogi (Sour Hawthorns), Kulig (Sleigh Ride) and Jak powstali Skaldowie (The Rise of Skaldowie), as well as numerous TV programmes: Listy śpiewające (Singing Letters), Spotkania z balladą (Encounters with Ballads), Po górach, po chmurach (Over Clouds and Mountains), and Podróż magiczna (Magical Journey). On the 4th of October 2014, the musical Prześliczna wiolonczelistka (Radiant Cellist) premiered at the Katowice Cultural Centre, gathering positive reviews. Skaldowie have won numerous awards, including the lifetime achievement Grand Prix at the 2009 National Festival of Polish Songs in Opole, and a special TVP lifetime achievement award in 2015. Additionally, on the 29th June 2006, members of the band were awarded the Medal for Merit to Culture – Gloria Artis medal in Warsaw.
On 9th August, the first 50 jubilee concert (of a planned tour) took place, and was transmitted live by TVP2. The performance was viewed by over 15 thousand guests in Gdów, and several million TV viewers. And on the 17th of November, the band will perform a jubilee concert in Krakow.
