ICE Classic - Kent Nagano

St. Luke’s Passion under the baton of Kent Nagano at the ICE Kraków Congress Centre! The performance by Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, led by world-famous American conductor Kent Nagano will take place as part of the ICE Classic series on the 18th of July 2018.

During the upcoming concert of the ICE Classic series, the outstanding conductor Kent Nagano will perform on the stage of the Auditorium Hall of the ICE Kraków Congress Centre. After the recital of the outstanding violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter and just before the June meeting with the Latvian mezzo-soprano player Elīna Garanča, we want to announce another great event. “We would like to invite music lovers from all over Poland to come to Krakow,” says Izabela Helbin, director of the Krakow Festival Office. “In 2018, we celebrate the 85th birthday of Krzysztof Penderecki, one of the most outstanding contemporary composers, and that is why the programme of the concert will feature his monumental, avant-garde St. Luke’s Passion. This unique piece will be performed by the famous Canadian Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, led by Kent Nagano,” Izabela Helbin added.

Kent Nagano feels at home in classical, Romantic and contemporary music, presenting the concert audience from all over the world with his own, fresh perspective on the repertoire performed. Since September 2006, the artist has been the music director of Orchestre symphonique de Montréal. In September 2015, he was appointed General Director of the Hamburg National Opera and Chief Conductor of the Hamburg State Philharmonic Orchestra.

Krzysztof Penderecki composed St. Luke’s Passion for the 700th anniversary of construction of the Münster Cathedral, where it was performed for the first time on the 30th of March 1966 and aroused great interest in the music world. The piece combines modern musical means of expression sacral form, all while not avoiding references to J.S. Bach’s work. Latin lyrics, quarter-tone arias and an enormous ensemble performing the piece make it exceptionally strong. The exquisite international ensemble will be complemented by the participation of outstanding soloists – Sarah Wegener, Lucas Meachem, Matthew Rose – as well as singers from the Krakow Philharmonic Choir and the Warsaw Boys’ Choir.
