ICE JAZZ:The extraordinary fusion of sounds in the ICE Krakow! SBB & TOMASZ STAŃKO
The meeting of two legends, an alliance of two immeasurable, yet distant musical worlds… but are they really distant? We’ll find out on the 4th of September in Krakow, during the next concert in the ICE Jazz cycle.
“This will be an unusual meeting of the Polish masters of jazz and progressive music”, said Izabela Helbin, director of the Krakow Festival Office. “Legends will perform at ICE Krakow. The concert starts off the musical autumn in Krakow and sets the bar extremely high – after all, SBB and Tomasz Stańko are giants of the Polish stage”, director Helbin added.
The performers in this show need no introduction: SBB was founded in 1971, Tomasz Stańko made his debut a decade earlier, and since then, they have coloured the musical world of successive generations of Poles and a multitude of foreign fans with their musical imagination.
From the beginning, they have worked with the greatest names – Tomasz Stańko with Krzysztof Komeda, Józef Skrzek, Apostolis Anthimos and Jerzy Piotrowski with Czesław Niemen – to quickly become independent and build their own, unquestionable fame. Thanks to their outstanding skills and extraordinary intuition, they are famous for improvised and sophisticated music that opens the sensitivity of listeners to new experiences – both jazzman Tomasz Stańko and the rockers of SBB have elevated it to an art, not only within the genres they play in.
It is hardly surprising that such extraordinary Polish musicians encountered each other on their artistic path, as early as the 1970s – evidence of this cooperation exists in the form of three pieces jointly recorded at the Polish Radio studios in Warsaw, published in 2005 in an anthology of SBB recordings. Decades later, the giants of the Polish stage will play together again in Krakow!
The return to Krakow has an additional flavour for the musicians of SBB – in the 1970s, after an exuberant performance on one of the local stages, the press and radio station of the time said that they were too loud, they looked too “western” and that they would never play in our city again. Nothing could be further from the truth – it is in Krakow that SBB gained their popularity: the Krakow audience knew music and was able to appreciate the electrifying effect that the combination of personalities and talents of the musicians in the band brought about. This same audience – and for those same reasons – flocks to Tomasz Stańko’s concerts: whether the famous trumpeter plays alone, with one of his formations, or as a special guest, his name is always a guarantee of the best artistic experiences.
On the 4th of September, the musical legends will meet at the ICE Kraków Congress Centre! We’ll hear both the “classics” of SBB and joint improvisations with Tomasz Stańko, specially arranged for the performance.
The concert is organised by the City of Krakow and the Krakow Festival Office, operator of the ICE Kraków Congress Centre.
