ICE Kraków is the “Accessibility Leader”!

On the 26th of September 2016, the ICE Kraków Congress Centre received the prestigious title of “Accessibility Leader” in the architectural and urban planning competition of the Integracja Foundation and the Polish Urban Planners Association. The facility was awarded for the best solutions in adaptation of the space to the needs of people with disabilities. The director of the Krakow Festival Office, the operator of the ICE Kraków Congress Centre, Izabela Helbin, received the prize from President Andrzej Duda.

The annual “Accessibility Leader” Competition, which takes place under the Honorary Patronage of the President of the Republic of Poland Andrzej Duda, is organised by the Integracja Foundation and the Polish Urban Planners Association. The competition jury, consisting of urban planners and specialists in the field of architectural accessibility and universal design, as well as those submitted by the Chancellery of the President of the Republic of Poland, awarded the title of “Accessibility Leader” to the ICE Kraków Congress Centre on the 26th of September 2016.

The jury was guided by criteria that take into account the scope of solutions to facilitate access for people with disabilities, their suitability for promoting best practices in this area, as well as the originality and complexity of the solutions.

From the beginning, ICE Kraków has implemented solutions for people with disabilities. Besides the standard preparation of a series of accommodations for persons with motor disabilities, among which are specially marked parking spaces, low-threshold interior doors and additional, dedicated entrance doors, the Congress Centre is actively working on the activisation of these groups. Examples of such activities are free rehearsals open to seniors, tours for patient groups from the rehabilitation ward of the Dr J. Babiński Specialist Hospital in Krakow, the wards of the Wrocław Children’s Hospice Foundation and retirees from the Polish Teachers’ Union.

The Congress Centre also draws particular attention to the supplementation of the event programme with an offer for children and excluded groups. It is thus open to its immediate surroundings, with four editions of open door days, the facility has hosted children and youth from nearby preschools and schools. The Congress Centre also supports youth career development through numerous meetings with students of Krakow universities and the “TACTICS? PRACTICE” internship programme.

The ICE Kraków Congress Centre was recognised among the nearly 80 thousand sites in Poland that were eligible to participate in the competition. The award ceremony took place during a conference held in the Presidential Palace.
