NIGEL KENNEDY BAND AND HERBIE HANCOCK SOLO IN THE ICE KRAKÓW – THE 20TH JUBILEE SUMMER JAZZ FESTIVAL
The Summer Jazz Festival in Krakow is spreading its wings; this year it will be held in a new location. In the Auditorium Hall of the ICE Kraków, one of the best concert halls in Poland, Nigel Kennedy will play with his ensemble during the Inauguration Concert of the Festival on the 26th of June. Less than a month later, on the 21st of July, the Congress Centre will be the venue of Herbie Hancock's first concert in Poland! The Krakow Festival Office and the ICE Kraków are the partners of the event.
The Summer Jazz Festival at Piwnica pod Baranami was organised for the first time in 1996 during the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Piwnica pod Baranami cabaret. It is the biggest Polish jazz festival and one of the bigger festivals in Europe. The event consists of around 50 concerts, with almost 200 Polish and foreign artists playing for around 30,000 guests every year.
On the 26th of June, Nigel Kennedy will perform with his jazz ensemble and the Beethoven Academy Orchestra. The concert “For a Friend” will be dedicated to Jarek Śmietana – a recently deceased jazz guitarist, with whom Kennedy collaborated for several years. Apart from J. S. Bach’s and N. Kennedy’s compositions, Śmietana's pieces will be performed. It will also be the inauguration of the Jarek Śmietana International Jazz Guitar Competition.
On the 21st of July, the ICE Kraków will be the venue of the solo concert of the undoubtedly greatest star of the Festival – Herbie Hancock, who will play the piano and keyboards. He is a versatile jazz composer who had a historical impact on the progress and development of this musical genre. He has won 14 Grammy awards, an Academy Award for his score for Round Midnight (1986) and the most prestigious jazz award – NEA Jazz Masters. He was a music partner of Miles Davis for many years.
