Over 5000 Meetings in Krakow! The meetings industry growing in strength!

In 2015, Krakow was the second city in Poland in terms of the number of meetings and events, according to the “Meetings and event industry in Poland 2016” report prepared by the Poland Convention Bureau. The capital of Małopolska was beaten only by Warsaw.

The results look impressive! In 2015, nearly 5200 meetings of different kinds took place in Krakow, which puts the capital of Małopolska in second place in Poland. The City of Kings was ahead of the third place Gdańsk, which had a result of 3240, by nearly 2000 meetings.

“The meetings and event industry in Poland, monitored by the Polish Tourist Organisation (PTO) generated approx. 1.577 billion PLN in added value for the economy in 2015”, said Dr Krzysztof Celuch, the author of the report. A significant portion of this amount stayed in Krakow.

“Krakow took first place in terms of the number of congresses and conferences. The ICE Kraków Congress Centre contributed significantly to this, hosting such large and prestigious events as the ISF International Seed Congress 2015 or the EUCASS 2015 European Conference for Aeronautics and Space Science”, said Izabela Helbin, director of the Krakow Festival Office, operator of ICE Kraków. This is confirmed by data from the report – 68% of meetings and events in Krakow are conferences and congresses. This is the highest average of all the cities presented in the report.

The document also highlights the scale of economic impact generated by meetings and events. The average participant’s spending is 505 PLN per day! Those who participate in the events also use accommodations and transport services and – spending time in Krakow – make purchases. Thus they generate revenue not only for the venue hosting a particular event, but also for the residents of the city.

Małgorzata Przygórska-Skowron from the Krakow Convention Bureau, the municipal institution responsible for building the image of Krakow and the presentation of its resources and values in the context of the meetings industry, commented on the report: “We’re proud that there is so much happening in Krakow. In the near future – on the 24th to the 26th of April 2016 – the 11th edition of Routes Europe, the largest European conference addressed to representatives of the aviation market will be held”. Przygórska-Skowron then continued about the meeting at ICE Kraków: “The conference will bring together representatives of airlines, airports and authorities who deal with tourist, including low-budget and national carriers from around the region”.

On the other hand, starting in Krakow today is the European Congress of Local Governments. It is an opportunity to establish partnership relations and exchange views on increasing efficiency in using European Union structural funds. The two-day event will be attended by over a thousand guests – representatives of Polish and Central European local governments, national governments, NGOs, businesses and academia. The programme includes nearly 100 events. The host venue of the Congress is the ICE Kraków Congress Centre.

The “Meetings and event industry in Poland 2016” report was prepared by the Poland Convention Bureau, which has operated since 2002 as part of the Polish Tourist Organisation. The main objective of the paper is to present the results that show the number and size of meetings and events organised in Poland in 2015. The report also presents their economic value.
