TEDxKraków 2012 – this Friday!

The international meeting of personalities and leaders will take place in Krakow this coming Friday, the 21st of September. This year edition’s subject is Secret Lives. “There’s always more to things than meets the eye, but we so rarely take the time to look at what’s really going on” deep inside, although what we find there is often “what it takes to make life work” – declare the organisers, adding: “At TEDxKraków 2012 we’ll look behind the curtain of the apparently mundane and everyday to get a glimpse of some of the unexpected, fascinating, worrying, intricate and maybe even repulsive, aspects of life that are usually invisible to us.” This year Krakow is hosting the event for the third time, partnered for the second time by the Krakow Festival Office, the operator of the ICE Congress Centre, currently under construction. We are delighted to announce that the Centre will be the venue of the 2015 edition of TedxKraków.

The list of the fifteen speakers of this year’s edition of TEDx Kraków includes, among others, Jerzy Vetulani – a neuroscientist, neuropsychopharmacologist, biochemist, member of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Polish Academy of Learning, one of the most frequently quoted Polish scientists; Joanna Hańderek – a philosopher and a lecturer at the Jagiellonian University, specializing in the study of culture; Mark Turrell – a tech pioneer and an entrepreneur whose interests and accomplishments circle around social welfare, collective intelligence and behaviourism; Keith Kahn-Harris – a London-based sociologist, writer and social activist; and Dawid Szczepaniak – a co-founder, co-owner and creative director of Pride&Glory Interactive – a new company, rated in its first year of operation as one of the three best Polish interactive agencies, and the Polish interactive agency of the year 2011 and 2012.

For the last few years TEDxKraków has been the driving force behind the people who want to fulfil their dreams. Operating under license from TED.com (Technology, Entertainment, Design) – the world-renowned conference focusing on technology, entertainment and design – [it is an event] presenting ideas that are worth spreading and make the world a better place. TEDxKraków 2012 is a mix of people connected with technology, business, science or entertainment. Each of them has an exciting story to tell and an important idea to share. Interestingly, TEDxKraków is run by a group of volunteers that are linked with Krakow, either through birth, work or fondness of the city.

Apart from the annual conference, TEDxKraków organises other events connected with TED’s idea, including the monthly TEDxKrakówCinema and TEDxKids@Kraków meetings. This year a new competition for ideas, TEDxKraków Award has been organised. Its winner will appear on the main event’s stage. And, on the night before TEDxKraków, TEDxKraków Hackathon will take place, a night meeting of computer software developers, graphic designers and social activists who will join their efforts to create tools to utilize data supplied by the Governor of Malopolska.

The TEDx conferences take place each year in major cities of the world. They present innovative projects connected with local communities, promote exchange of opinions, discuss trends and stimulate active or creative endeavours. In the first Krakow edition of the conference held last year, over 500 people participated, while over 16,000 watched the event online.
