Until the mid-1980s the band gained worldwide recognition, mainly due to the passionate three-octave voice of their frontman, Bono, The Edge’s original style of playing guitar and their repertoire, comprising mainly melodic, catchy songs filled to the brim with emotions, some of which became worldwide hits – “Sunday Bloody Sunday”, “New Year's Day”, “Bad”, “Pride (In the Name of Love)”, “With or Without You”, “Angel of Harlem”, “One” and “Beautiful Day”. U2 enjoyed their greatest success in 1987 after releasing The Joshua Tree, the first single of which – “With or Without You” quickly rose to number one of the Billboard Chart.
